Missed period and pregnancy myth

Missed periods don’t necessarily mean pregnancy. Although pregnancy may cause missed periods, there are still other factors to consider. So for women out there, amenorrhea in a month can be because of life changing events other than sex. Naturally, after the menarche or first period, ladies should expect to have their menstruation every month. This is generally true those with regular periods, but for others, their menstrual cycle becomes abnormal for various reasons.

Stress is one of the very reasons for missed periods. Scientifically, stress causes the body to decrease the amount of hormones released. Since menstrual cycle is dictated by the release of hormones, the amount of hormones like follicle-stimulating hormones and luteinizing hormones which helps release the estrogen and progesterone are decreased. Stress can come in many forms without women acknowledging it. For instance, a new job, massive workload, sleeping in the wee hours of the morning and even getting a woman’s heartbroken causes stress.

Weight gain and sudden weight loss causes amenorrhea or missed period. Going way beyond the ideal weight again causes hormones to work in an abnormal pattern. Women may miss there period of a month or 2, or sometimes, late periods occur. Late period is described when menstruation does not occur on the expected date. Rather, it occurs a week or two weeks after. Gynecologists always suggest trimming down weight but it should not happen abruptly.

But apart from the simple reasons which suggest a few lifestyle changes, there are serious conditions that need to be taken account of in missed periods. These problems require having a trip to the gynecologist so that they will receive proper treatment. One of which is the polycystic ovarian syndrome. This is commonly referred to as PCOS. In his condition, the egg cells develop into cysts and because of that, missed periods happen. This should be treated right away because if not, it can cause infertility, acne, diabetes and even cancer. Since the ovaries are affected, OB-GYNEs insert a piece of probe either into the vagina or through the anus to have a better picture of the ovaries and see the cysts. Pills are the most common treatment for this problem.

Lastly, pregnancy causes amenorrhea. For sexually active women, a missed period highly indicates pregnancy. But how do women exactly know when do pregnancy symptom start? The answer does not have any specific timing but when a missed period is accompanied with changes like early morning sickness, weight gain and a growing abdomen, then she should go to the OB-GYNE.
